There’s something magical about the hour just after sunrise or just before sunset … what photographers call “Golden Hour.” During this time, the sun casts a warm, gentle light that flatters skin tones and creates a natural glow. Harsh midday shadows disappear, replaced by soft, dimensional highlights that bring out the best in every subject. For portrait photography, Golden Hour is not just ideal … it’s transformative. Our region of Northwest Ohio is known for its beautiful coastline. It is a perfect backdrop for stunning portraits. A sunrise engagement session on Lake Erie? 1000% RECOMMEND! It was an early wake up call for Lauren and Cole’s early morning session … but totally worth it for that early morning glow off the lake.
Lauren and Cole traveled across the country from California to visit family in Ohio. While in the area, we planned their engagement session where her family has loved spending time on the water. We visited Marblehead Lighthouse State Park at sunrise as the light was just coming up over the lake.
They chose light-colored clothing that complemented the environment, enhancing the overall aesthetic but also helping to avoid unwanted color casts on the skin. Soft, neutral tones often pair beautifully with nature’s golden palette.
